IOCB Prague
The IOCB Prague is one of the leading internationally recognised research institutions in the Czech Republic. It is focused on basic research in various fields from organic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, biochemistry, chemical biology, materials science, nanoscience to theoretical chemistry and physical chemistry.
The IOCB Prague was also successful in applied research, which led to the discovery of acyclic nucleotide phosphonate antivirals by Antonín Holý. These drugs (cidofovir, tenofovir and adefovir) were later commercialised by Gilead Sciences, Inc., USA allowing to significantly improve the quality of life of HIV/AIDS and hepatitis B patients worldwide. Income from royalties enabled the IOCB Prague to modernise the entire campus and equip it with the most modern instruments. There are 25 registered drugs whose active substances originated from the IOCB Prague. In 2006, the Gilead Sciences Research Centre at the IOCB Prague has established to maintain long-term cooperation.
The IOCB Prague has more than 950 employees from over 40 countries, including 220 PhD students.
